One in a Million
The Full Story
About
On the 20th of October 2022 Mike Wilson died after a short battle with adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC), he was only 56 years old.
ACC is a rare aggressive cancer that affects about one in a million people per year. In the United States (US) that equates to about 330 people / year and in countries like Australia the incidence of ACC is much lower, with less than 30 people per year diagnosed. ACC is an orphan disease, which makes it difficult to obtain a diagnosis, there are limited treatment options, little research being done on ACC, the treatment for ACC has not changed in decades, and there are very few experts available for consultation. Due to these facts, ACC has a very poor prognosis.

Mission
One in a Million has been established by Mike’s wife Dr Lauren Wilson, who was a medical researcher at the Australian National University and in industry. Despite Lauren’s medical research background before her husband Mike was diagnosed with ACC she had never heard of this rare cancer.
Lauren has established One in a Million in honor of Mike’s legacy.

Vision
The vision of One in a Million is to raise awareness of ACC. The purpose is to raise funds for much needed ACC research, early diagnosis, and to support families.
