Mike Wilson 11th March 1966 - 20th October 2022
Michael (Mike) Wilson, was diagnosed with Adrenocortical Carcinoma (ACC) on the 6th of September 2022. ACC is a rare aggressive cancer that only affects One in a Million people per year. Prior to Mike's diagnosis, his only symptoms were high blood pressure and fatigue, which were being managed by his primary physician. Mike was still active and enjoying mountain biking, going to the gym and spending time with his wife Lauren.
Ono the 25th of August 2022, Mike was admitted to the hospital due to his high blood pressure and it took the doctors nearly one week to diagnose him with cancer. His liver enzymes were elevated and the doctor ordered a CT scan of the abdomen. The CT scan showed masses in the adrenal gland, liver, and abdominal lymph nodes. At this time it was unknown the primary source of the cancer.
It would take nearly another week before Mike was diagnosed with Stage IV Adrenocortical Carcinoma (ACC). Due to the aggressive nature of ACC Mike started chemo the next week. Mike was so strong and brave and always thought of others over himself throughout his fight with ACC. Unfortunately, on the 20th October 2022 Mike lost his battle with ACC.
One in a Million has been established to honor Mike's legacy. Mike has always supported his wife, Dr Lauren Wilson in her research career. The money raised through the non-profit One in a Million will go to set up a PhD scholarship for research into ACC. There is a need for further research into ACC for earlier diagnosis and treatments. 21-35% of people diagnosed with ACC are diagnosed at Stage IV, which is when the cancer has already spread to distant organs. There are very few experts in ACC, which makes early diagnosis difficult. The treatments for ACC have not changed in decades and due to the rareness of ACC, there is not much research being conducted on new less toxic therapeutics.
Please help One in a Million raise awareness of ACC and funds for research to keep Mike's legacy alive.
